US/ICOMOS joins the United States members of the ICOMOS-IFLA International Scientific Committee on Cultural Landscapes (ISCCL) in expressing our deepest condolences to the family, and to our dear colleagues at Parks Canada, ICOMOS Canada and Willowbank, on the passing of Susan Buggey. Susan passed away peacefully at Ottawa General Hospital on April 16, 2015. Susan was not only active in ICOMOS Canada and the ISCCL, she was a founder of the US/Canada Alliance of Historic Landscape Preservation and a fellow of the Association for Preservation Technology.
Recalling Susan’s 30+ year career in heritage, US ISCCL Expert Member and US/ICOMOS Trustee Patricia O’Donnell observed that “Susan’s work in the field of cultural landscape began with the pioneers in the late 1970s and closed, too soon, with her recent explorations of the indigenous landscapes and the recognition of patterns of evidence of traditional practices these landscapes express. She was a pillar in the preservation of landscape heritage, at Parks Canada and beyond. She will be remembered for her foundational writings and presentations and the insights she brought to her fruitful collaborations.”
As a testament to Susan’s influence here in the United States, the National Park Service’s National Center for Preservation Technology and Training maintains the attached video interview of Susan on its web page. A tribute to the life of Susan Buggey is planned for June in Ottawa. ICOMOS Canada reports that, in lieu of flowers, those who wish, may make a donation to the Willowbank Cultural Landscape Fellowship (that Susan established), Dalhousie University Atlantic World History Scholarship or a charity of their choice.
