World Heritage USA 2020 Symposium

Day Two: Social Justice and Indigenous Peoples

Plenary Session

Welcoming Indigenous Peoples to their National Park Sites
Dorothy FireCloud

I am a member of the Sicangu Lakota (Rosebud Sioux Tribe) located in the state of South Dakota. I am a grandmother of 4 girls and 2 boys, and another girl to arrive in December. I have my law degree from the University of New Mexico and have been a member of the New Mexico Bar since 1991. I have worked with the US federal government since 1992. About a month ago I began working as the Native American Affairs Liaison, Assistant to the NPS Director.

I will discuss my story related to how tribal people have felt unwelcomed to their ancestral homelands within National Park sites and how we are working to change that paradigm.
